The district was created in 1717 and on March 30th 1938 the village was finally appointed to become a district. -The general concern to protect this region, especially due to its richness of wild life and flora (mangroves, waterfalls, untouched beaches and jungles), the Marau peninsula was declared an Environment Protected Area (APA) by the government. -The Barra Grande fisherman village is the main village of the Marau Península. -At the Camamú Bay, the Barra Grande beach is a nice setting with light color sand and calm waters. The Barra Grande village is the entrance port for the Marau Península, where travelers arrive from Camamu, and find a nice and charming village with regional restaurants and bars. -In the village there are good options for dinning that range from local, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and seafood cuisine. -On the tours and excursions aspect; this region offers all kinds of beaches, natural swimming pools and reefs, surf beaches, calm and clear waters.
